In the oil and gas industry, hoists play a critical role in maintaining the performance and productivity of wells. Hoists are used to lift and lower various equipment and materials necessary for the efficient operation of the wells, such as pumps, pipes, and drilling tools.
Maintaining the optimal performance of the wells is crucial for the industry's success, as any disruption to productivity can have significant financial implications. Hoists, therefore, are essential for the efficient maintenance of wells and to ensure their continued operation.
They have a limited number of hoist systems available that are utilized across multiple wells, leading to inefficiencies in distribution and wastage of time. The main challenge entails developing AI-powered software that minimizes hoist-related time wastage while ensuring their optimal and efficient distribution.
Optimizing hoist schedules is a multifaceted task that involves numerous parameters, posing a challenge to human decision-makers seeking to achieve optimal outcomes. The objective was, therefore, to identify these parameters and devise a solution that incorporates them to streamline hoist scheduling in a more efficient manner.
Solution
PhazeRo has developed a Proof of Concept (PoC) software solution for the Client to optimize their drilling and maintenance programs using limited resources across multiple wells. Hoist Sequence Optimizer is an AI based solution designed to monitor and ingest data from various sources and produce an optimal schedule that maximizes a particular objective metric while respecting priority constraints.
The software allows users to model different scheduling scenarios by dragging and dropping wells in a custom order, enabling them to visualize the effects of each change in the schedule on different key metrics such as total time and costs of hoist jobs. This functionality provides users with greater flexibility in optimizing hoist schedules and enables them to make informed decisions based on real-time data.
By leveraging PhazeRo's software solution, the Client reduced increased hoist productivity with hoists and distributed them efficiently, resulting in significant cost savings for rig management teams. The solution's ability to optimize hoist schedules based on a range of variables and constraints makes it a valuable tool for the oil and gas industry, helping to improve the efficiency and productivity of well maintenance and drilling programs.
Approach
The sources for data used in this proof of concept (PoC) project was diverse, including Energy components, Well integrity stream -eWIPS, Nibras Opportunity Register/FUP, and Takamul. Live databases were established for both wells and hoists to collect information from these external sources. Furthermore, the software necessitate a historical dataset of hoist jobs with details like time, cost, and type, which includes workover, well open-up, FBU, and restoration.
Once we have collected the data, we perform a thorough cleaning and preprocessing step to ensure that the data is accurate, consistent, and ready for analysis. This may involve removing duplicate entries, filling in missing values, and transforming the data into a format that is suitable for analysis.
Before we begin any formal analysis, we perform exploratory data analysis (EDA) to gain insights into the data and identify any patterns or relationships that may exist. This may involve visualizations such as histograms, scatterplots, and heatmaps.
A dashboard was created to present real-time statistics for the various hoists and wells, along with the alerts that are produced. The program was provided with an intuitive, web-based interface for users, which allows schedules to be presented in a customizable Gantt chart format that can be easily modified through a drag-and-drop method.
